Loveland, Colorado

I’ve just returned from four glorious days in northern Colorado, affectionately known as NoCO. My husband and I were based out of Denver, but we managed to daytrip to some surrounding areas, including a smallish (pop. 67,000) town called Loveland. We met a woman who lives there and raved about it, so we decided to check it out.

In the mid-1800s it was first settled and became the site of a state coach line stop. It eventually morphed into a train line and station, serving the farmers and loggers in the area and thus flourishing.

Loveland was incorporated in 1881. Today it’s a modern city, to be sure, but the historic buildings survive, namely, the 4th Street district. The street nearly screams Old West (well, except for the cars and parking meters):

The Post Office there has a re-mailing program wherein you can send your Valentine’s cards to them so your loved one receives mail postmarked from Loveland. They receive mail from all 50 states and 120 countries to be stamped with a valentine’s message from Loveland and mailed out to the recipients.

There are tons of charming restaurants as well. You’ll see more about the one we visited in a future blog post.

One of my favorite things about the 4th Street area was the public art. This bronze sculpture is titled “Pondering Chimpanzee”.

The arts seems to be a big deal there. A few blocks away is a sculpture garden, but I didn’t have time to see it – yet. And, currently, Loveland is taking applications for artists to decorate the green housing boxes that hide electrical equipment along the streets.

While I didn’t get to spend very much time in Loveland, I’m looking forward to returning there soon. They have an art museum that I want to check out and many more locales to photograph. Of course, you’ll be the first to see the photos!
