Egmont Key is accessible only by boat, so my fellow photographer and I boarded the tour boat and set out to photograph the historical island. It features a working lighthouse, gopher tortoises and ruins of an old army fort.
Each year on May 1st most European countries celebrate May Day, which is the equivalent of Labor Day in the US. Bavarians decorate a tall pole with an evergreen wreath at the top. It's a grand effort and ceremony to raise it. Then they, well, dance around the maypole! Here's my timelapse video of just such an event near Munich, Germany.
During Lent, Bavarians observe what is known as Starkbierfest, or Strong Beer Fest. At that time, uber-strong beer can be had at the breweries and it will knock you down. It's said that monks, who fasted during Lent, subsisted on this strong brew.
My first foray into what I hope is a long-running series: ghost towns. First up, Dearfield, Colorado, founded by O. T. Jackson in 1910. It's the site of a former African-American agricultural colony that thrived until the Great Depression and Dust Bowl of the 1930s. Here are photos of the ramshackle remains.
